Quick answer

With 24 hours in Brindisi, walk the old town: the Roman column at the end of the Via Appia, Piazza Duomo, the waterfront and the boat to the Monumento al Marinaio at sunset, then dinner by the harbour. With 48 hours, add a half-day trip to Ostuni (about 20 minutes by train) or Lecce (about 30). The airport is only 10 minutes away.

Why a night in Brindisi makes sense

The last flight of the evening lands, and twenty minutes later you are sitting on a terrace with the cathedral's bell tower lit up over the roofs, eating bread and tomatoes someone bought at the market that morning. That is a Brindisi stopover done right.

Brindisi is not a place you come to for two weeks. It is a crossroads. The airport is about 10 minutes from the old town, the railway station is on the main Adriatic line, and the ferries to Greece leave from the same harbour the Romans used. Many travellers spend a night here because of a timetable, not by choice. This guide is about turning that night, or two, into a good part of the trip.

Below you will find what to do if you have an early flight or a late arrival, what to do with your bags, how to see the essential Brindisi in a few hours, one evening plan, and a 48-hour plan with a trip to Ostuni or Lecce.

Early flight from Brindisi: where to sleep and when to leave

The single best reason to sleep in Brindisi is an early flight. From the old town the airport is about 10 minutes by car. From Lecce it is about 40 minutes, from Ostuni about 35, from Polignano about an hour. At 05:00, those differences feel enormous.

  • For a flight before 07:00: book a taxi or transfer the evening before. The first STP buses start around 05:30, which is too late for the earliest departures.
  • For a flight from 08:00: the early bus from the railway station to the airport is an option if you travel light, but check the current timetable.
  • Timing: for domestic and Schengen flights, leaving the old town about 1 h 30 before departure is usually enough. Add time in August or if you return a hire car.

Pack the night before, keep your documents on top, and fill a water bottle. The airport cafés open early, but not always as early as the first flights.

Late arrival in Brindisi: getting in after dark

Summer evenings bring a wave of flights from northern Italy and the rest of Europe. If you land after about 22:30, do not count on the bus: the last runs leave before midnight, and a delay can make you miss them.

Book a taxi or a transfer, and send your flight number to your host. A good host follows the flight and waits. At BDS House, airport transfers are available on request, and if the plane is late we simply move the handover.

Then go out. Brindisi eats late in summer, and the waterfront is still busy at 23:00. A short walk to the harbour and a plate of something simple is the right way to arrive in Puglia. Our airport to city centre guide compares the bus, taxi, transfer and hire car in detail.

What to do with your luggage in Brindisi

The classic stopover problem: check-out is in the morning, the flight or ferry is in the evening. A few options:

  • Ask your host. Many apartments and B&Bs in the old town can keep bags for a few hours after check-out. At BDS House check-out is by 11:00 and check-in from 14:00; ask in advance about leaving bags if your departure is later.
  • Luggage storage apps. Services such as Stasher and Radical Storage list partner shops in Brindisi, mostly in the centre and near the station. Prices are per bag per day; book in the app and check opening hours.
  • A hire car boot. If you have a car, it works as a locker, but park in a busy, visible spot and leave nothing on the seats.

Do not plan on storing bags at the airport without checking first. Services at small terminals change, and finding out at the last minute is not fun.

What to see in Brindisi in a few hours

The old town is compact, and the essential walk takes three to four hours at an easy pace, including a coffee.

  1. The Roman column and the Scalinata Virgilio, the traditional end of the Via Appia, above the harbour.
  2. Lungomare Regina Margherita, the waterfront promenade, with the fishing boats and the view across the water.
  3. Piazza Duomo, with the cathedral, the Portico dei Cavalieri Templari and the archaeology museum.
  4. San Giovanni al Sepolcro, an 11th-century round church built on the model of the Holy Sepulchre.
  5. The harbour boat to the Monumento al Marinaio d'Italia, for the best view back over the city.

If you have only one hour, walk from Piazza Duomo to the Roman column and along the waterfront. That is the Brindisi people remember. For the full version, with opening times and Romanesque churches, see things to do in Brindisi.

One evening in Brindisi: a simple plan

If you have one evening, this is how I would spend it.

  • 18:30: the boat across the inner harbour to the Monumento al Marinaio, about 30 minutes before sunset. Watch the old town turn gold.
  • 19:30: back on the Lungomare for the passeggiata, the slow evening walk that the whole city takes part in.
  • 20:00: an aperitivo facing the water. In Puglia it usually comes with something to eat.
  • 21:00: dinner. Look for raw and cooked seafood, orecchiette, and fried fish in a paper cone. Our what to eat in Brindisi guide has the dishes to order.
  • 22:30: the Roman column lit up at night, then gelato on the way home.

Timings shift with the season: in July sunset is after 20:00, in October around 18:00. Adjust, but keep the order.

Brindisi in 48 hours: add Ostuni or Lecce

With two days, see Brindisi on the first and use the second for one of Puglia's famous towns. Both are close enough to go and come back without stress.

Day 1: arrive, the essential walk in the afternoon, the evening plan above. Day 2: an early train to Ostuni or Lecce, lunch there, back in Brindisi by late afternoon, a last swim or a rest on the terrace, dinner. If your flight or ferry is on the morning of day 3, you are 10 minutes from the airport or 10 to 15 from the port.

If you have a car and the season is right, swap the town for the sea: the reserve of Torre Guaceto is about 25 minutes north. Our day trips from Brindisi guide covers Alberobello, Polignano, Otranto and more.

Ferry passengers: a night before or after Greece

Ferries to Greece (Corfu, Igoumenitsa, Patras and, in summer, other ports) leave from the Costa Morena terminal on the eastern side of the harbour. Many crossings are overnight or leave in the evening, which makes a day in Brindisi before boarding a natural fit.

Check out, leave your bags, walk the old town, eat a long lunch, and take a taxi to Costa Morena with plenty of margin before check-in closes. Coming back, a night in the old town after an early-morning arrival is a gentler start to Italy than driving straight on. The STP airport bus also reaches Costa Morena during the day, which helps if you connect from a flight.

Where to stay for a short stopover in Brindisi

For one or two nights, the old town wins: you walk out of the door into the evening passeggiata, and the airport, the station and the port are all within about 15 minutes.

BDS House is a whole home at Vico D'Orimini 11, in the old town, sleeping up to six. There are two private terraces, one on the rooftop with a view over the city, a full kitchen, a washing machine (useful mid-trip), air conditioning and a desk with a 27-inch monitor if you need to work between connections. The railway station is about 750 m away, free parking is in Via Spalato, about 9 minutes on foot, and airport transfers are available on request. Guests rate it 5.0 on Google.

Questions travellers ask

Is Brindisi worth a stopover?

Yes. The airport is about 10 minutes from the old town, so a night in Brindisi costs almost no travel time. In a few hours you can see the Roman column at the end of the Via Appia, the cathedral square, the waterfront and the harbour boat at sunset, then have dinner by the water.

What can you see in Brindisi in one day?

In one day you can walk the whole old town: the Roman column and Virgil's steps, Lungomare Regina Margherita, Piazza Duomo with the Templars' portico and the archaeology museum, the round church of San Giovanni al Sepolcro, and the boat across the harbour to the Monumento al Marinaio.

Should I stay in Brindisi or Lecce before an early flight?

Stay in Brindisi. The airport is about 10 minutes from Brindisi old town but about 40 minutes from Lecce by car, and public transport does not run early enough for the first flights. Sleeping in Brindisi gives you a full extra hour of sleep and a cheaper taxi.

How do I get from Brindisi Airport to the old town late at night?

The STP airport bus runs until about 23:45, but delays can make you miss it. For arrivals after about 22:30, book a taxi or transfer in advance and send your flight number to your host. The drive to the old town takes about 10 minutes.

Where can I leave luggage in Brindisi?

Ask your accommodation first: many old-town hosts keep bags for a few hours after check-out. Otherwise, luggage storage apps such as Stasher and Radical Storage list partner shops in the centre and near the station. Check opening hours before you rely on them for an evening flight or ferry.

Can I visit Ostuni from Brindisi in half a day?

Yes. Regional trains take about 20 to 25 minutes from Brindisi to Ostuni station, then a short bus or taxi ride up to the old town. By car it is about 30 to 35 minutes. Half a day is enough to walk the white town and see the view.

Is Lecce a good day trip from Brindisi?

Yes. Lecce is about 25 to 35 minutes by regional train or 35 to 40 minutes by car. Half a day covers the baroque centre, Piazza del Duomo, the Basilica of Santa Croce and the Roman amphitheatre. With a full day you can add a long lunch and more churches.

How far is Brindisi ferry port from the old town?

Ferries to Greece leave from Costa Morena, on the eastern side of the harbour, about 10 to 15 minutes by taxi from the old town. The STP airport bus also reaches Costa Morena during the day. Allow a generous margin before check-in closes.
